**Inside Story*** When a trainer takes his horses up north to race, and the horse doesn't win or get placed, the owner often thinks it is worthless.
It costs $500 to transport a horse from perth to Geraldton, and another $500 to take it back. Some trainers or owners decide that the horse is not worth it, so thery leave it in the bush. It would be almost impossible for a thoroughbred to live in the bush. They are used to having their feed made for them, corn and oats and lucerne hay, all replaced by dry spinifex grass. the horses try to eat the spinifex, but it scratches their delicate muzzles and damages their mouth. now they can't eat, they die of starvation. This is what we do to ex racehorses. |
